Government officials in Mexico revealed that construction of
the new Tulum International Airport was about 65 percent completed and remains
on track for its scheduled opening in December.
According to Riviera
Maya News, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Quintana Roo Governor
Mara Lezama toured the side of the Tulum airport on Saturday, receiving
progress reports from members of the National Defense, which is running the construction
site.
The facility—officially dubbed Felipe Carrillo Puerto
International Airport of Tulum—has helped create over 14,000 jobs as the 24/7
construction project continues. Once open, officials expect to accommodate
around five million travelers per year.
“Military workers and engineers from the Secretariat of
National Defense are seen carrying out the finishing work on the new Felipe
Carrillo Puerto Tulum International Airport in Quintana Roo,” López Obrador told
Riviera Maya News.
Following an aerial tour of the area and ground tours of the
new airport and surrounding exterior grounds, López Obrador remained adamant
that Tulum airport and Mexico’s other mega project, the Maya Train, would be completed
by the end of 2023.
The news comes days after the United States government
announced that Mexico’s aviation safety rating was once again elevated to the highest
level two years after being moved to Category 2.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed that
Mexican airlines would be permitted to add routes to the U.S., while carriers
in America can once again sell tickets on Mexican airline-operated flights.
