The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an airworthiness directive for some engines manufactured by Lycoming.
The problem appears to be specific to engines that have shown a failure in connecting rods. Reports have included instances of engine failure in midflight.
Airworthiness directives are issued to all owners and operators of such airplanes that utilize the equipment and run the risk of a safety problem. Inspections are mandatory and, if necessary, parts must be replaced.
About 16,000 engines were produced by Lycoming between 2009 and 2017. These are the affected engines and it could cost a total of nearly $20 million to replace parts. The directive goes into effect on December 5, 2024.
It is certainly not the first time the FAA has issued such an order.
