San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is looking to
appeal to luxury travelers by seeking proposals for a new private terminal
located around six miles from the main facility.
According to ABC7News.com,
SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel revealed that the proposed terminal would be
located near Signature Aviation and provide commercial airline passengers to
bypass traditional airport security lines for a fee.
Travelers who buy access to the luxury terminal will undergo
a more private and streamlined Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
screening process, with passengers then being transported by car to their
flights.
As part of the plan, the private terminal at SFO would
include a luxury lounge.
“I would say that, you know, the Jeff Bezos of the world,
they already have their own aircraft,” Yakel told ABC. “They already have a
process in place. They don't need a product like this.”
“This is more for people that don't have their own airplane
that still fly commercial but want to pay for an elevated experience,” Yakel continued.
“That's really the niche we're trying to hit here.”
The SFO spokesperson said the airport is asking bidders to
submit proposals to build and operate the private terminal by October 7, with
the winning company determining pricing. Yakel also added that similar services
at other airports in Los Angeles and Dallas costs between $800 and $1,800 per
use.
The off-site terminal, which was pitched to meet the “recent
increase in demand for luxury travel services,” could open as early as late
2028, pending approvals.
