Southwest Airlines is throwing its passengers a bone.
It might not sound like much, but it does give passengers some flexibility.
After an internal memo leaked about a change in ticketing and boarding that might require passengers to upgrade their seats and pay more, Southwest announced it would offer free same-day standby on all tickets.
On the surface, it might not sound like much. But remember that the carrier has a unique boarding process in which there are no assigned seats. You are placed into a group and can pick your own seat when your group is called.
If you don’t like the choice of seats when you board, you can elect to fly standby for free on a later flight.
And if travel plans change passengers now have more flexibility on Southwest.
“Currently, Rapid Rewards tier members and customers traveling on Business Select, Anytime, and Wanna Get Away Plus fares have flexibility to list on a different flight free of charge on their day of travel,” the airline said in a press release. “This new offering expands the benefit to all Southwest customers.”
You can request standby at the airport, or you can do it online or on the airline’s app on your phone.
Southwest is also meeting a policy change with its internet.
“A-List Preferred Customers already receive free Inflight Internet, and Customers who purchase Business Select fares will too, with the ability to connect up to three devices per leg for free when this offering launches,” Southwest’s statement said.
