Southwest Airlines
is making changes. Big changes.
The carrier, the nation’s fourth largest, will add seven more routes at the expense of dropping or altering four others. Las Vegas appears to be the big winner.
Southwest will add
flights from Harry Reid
International Airport to Albany and Rochester in New York and Grand Rapids
in Michigan as it prepares to take on Vegas’ hometown airline, Allegiant. All flights will
begin later this year.
Southwest will
also offer new flights from Nashville to Birmingham, AL; Miami to Islip, New
York; Kansas City to Sacramento; and Phoenix to Birmingham.
The Miami flight to Islip will replace the current flight to Long Island from Fort Lauderdale. A flight from Kansas City to Minneapolis and Denver and Santa Barbara to Eugene, Oregon, will be altered.
Southwest said in a statement, “This is a continued focus: optimizing the usage of our people and planes to serve our customers with relevant air service.”
Southwest also said earlier this year that it would
start red-eye flights.
