The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a Spirit Airlines flight that left plane parts in metro Detroit residents' yards this week.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Atlanta-bound flight was forced to turn back to Detroit Metropolitan Airport shortly after takeoff because of an engine failure on Monday night.

The plane landed without incident but left pieces of debris in nearby yards.

"It's hard to speculate, we will determine the cause of the incident," FAA spokesperson Tony Molinaro told the Free Press.

In an email to the publication, a passenger on the Monday evening flight said the plane was "about 5,000" feet above the ground when passengers heard "a large bang and the plane started to shake and shudder [sic]."

The witness also said they saw fire and sparks from the right engine, which was apparently losing metal.

The FAA sent investigators to look into the incident Tuesday and Molinaro said the investigation should be wrapped up in the coming weeks.

Part of investigators' efforts will include examining the plane pieces found in the yards.

Spirit compensated affected passengers with $50 vouchers and put them on new flights to Atlanta.
