United Airlines is reportedly developing a new class of seating, which is said to be a business class inside the existing business class.
It’s called
Premium Economy.
When booking airfare for the Polaris line of seating, United customers will be given the option to upgrade to the premium economy. Above the amenities already included are suites with doors and push-button champagne service.
Other amenities being considered include more spacious seats, private check-in, and priority for sit-down dining at the Polaris airport lounges. The new seating class could elevate United to be on par with its rivals, Delta and American.
There might be some
opposition to that champagne button, however.
Sara Nelson, president
of the main flight attendants’ union, including those who work at United, said the call button on airplanes is to be used for emergencies and not for pseudo-waitress service. She previously tried to get airlines to ban alcohol service to reduce the amount of time that the flight attendants would have to devote to that.

The airline has not
commented on the possibility of a new class of seating.
