Travelers in Colorado will soon have a direct connection to the Eternal City, as United Airlines announced plans for Denver International Airport’s (DEN) first nonstop flight to Rome this week. Starting May 1, 2025, the airline will offer seasonal service to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO), CBS News reported.
In doing so, the United will be addressing what the carrier has identified as Denver’s largest underserved international market. The airline revealed that over 60,000 passengers traveled between Denver and Rome in 2024, a 30 percent increase from the year prior. United reported that Italy currently ranks as the fourth most sought-after global destination for Denver-based travelers, trailing only Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom.
This new route is part of United’s broader expansion strategy, which will introduce seven additional destinations from Denver next year. On May 15, United will inaugurate international service to Regina, Saskatchewan (YQR), while domestic flights to Peoria, Illinois (PIA) will commence in late March. By Memorial Day, flights to Buffalo, New York (BUF), North Bend, Oregon (OTH), Pensacola, Florida (PNS), Redding, California (RDD) and Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM) will also begin.
"United's continued commitment to delivering an exceptional travel experience in Denver is underscored by these new routes and the nearly $1 billion in investments we have made to enhance the customer experience and bring greater convenience," Jonna McGrath, Vice President of United's Denver hub, in a statement. "As Denver's hometown airline, we're proud to offer more destinations than any other carrier, giving Colorado residents and travelers passing through Denver unmatched flexibility and options to explore the destinations they want to visit most."
