Delta Air Lines has announced that it will begin daily nonstop service from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to five new destinations next spring, according to AirwaysNews.com's Benet J. Wilson.
The move, which was announced on Wednesday, signals the latest maneuver in the ongoing battle between Delta and Alaska Airlines.
Seattle-Tacoma currently functions as Alaska Airlines' hub, but the smaller carrier finds itself under immense pressure from Delta, who will soon offer daily flights from Seattle to Denver, Sacramento and Boise in addition to two other locations in Alaska beginning as soon as May.
As a result of the airline's latest effort to bolster its West Coast nerve center, Delta is set to deliver customers to more than a dozen of the premier destinations in the western United States as well as the five leading destinations in Alaska.
According to Wilson, Delta's new routes will allow passengers to connect with 10 international flights that the company already offers out of Seattle, including a collection of prominent destinations across Europe and Asia.
Delta's flight announcement comes in the wake of the airline's $15 million investment in Seattle-Tacoma. Lobby renovations, recharging stations and enhanced ticket counters are just some of the improvements recently financed and completed by Delta.
Although it appears that Delta has the upper hand in the battle for Seattle-Tacoma, the Atlanta-based airline is facing significant opposition from Alaska Airlines. Earlier this year, company CFO Brandon Pedersen announced plans to compete with the major airlines.
Alaska Airlines' 10-Q form released earlier this month states the following:
"We have made changes to our network to increase the markets served out of Seattle and to redeploy capacity in order to better match demand and optimize revenue. We believe we are well positioned to compete against these competitive incursions because of our excellent operational performance, our award-winning service, our loyal customer base, and our low cost structure, which allows us to offer low fares."
With both airlines possessing a clear vision for success in the Emerald City, it's likely the struggle for Seattle will rage on.
