The numbers of travelers using Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS) are showing growth, both for overall travel in the first six months of this year and the summer travel season so far, despite weak global economies and difficult circumstances earlier this year, including the Icelandic volcano. Almost 8.4 million passengers have used DUS in the first six months of 2010, an increase of 320,000, or 4 percent, compared to the same period in 2009. March and May showed record growth -- 12 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively. In addition, the first three weeks of this year's summer vacation season have already brought 1.5 million travelers, an increase of 6 percent, raising the forecast for the season's total passenger number from 2.8 million to 3 million. July 15 set a new record in the history of the airport, with 74,500 passengers in one day.
These developments confirm the status of DUS as a new-generation hub for international vacation and business travel, both as a final and transfer airport. The U.S. and Caribbean are among the most popular destinations for travelers from DUS. Others include Italy, Turkey and Egypt. The summer flight schedule at DUS includes about 170 destinations served by 60 airlines. In addition to the airport, hotels in the city report growing numbers of guests. More than 18 percent of hotels in a recent survey by the local Chamber of Commerce said they plan to hire new staff to meet the increasing numbers of both leisure and business travelers to Düsseldorf.
Düsseldorf International Airport, Germany's third largest, offers several non-stop flights from U.S. and Canadian cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Ft. Myers, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver, as well as convenient connections to many European cities and beyond.
