JetBlue Airways is offering free airfare to Fort Lauderdale for family members of the victims in last week’s tragic Parkland school shooting, the airline announced via its blog, Out of the Blue.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of Wednesday’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones,” wrote the airline.
"This week’s events are felt by all of our 21,000 crewmembers, many of whom live in, work from and travel through the Broward County area, home to our Focus City, Fort Lauderdale. We want to do our part to help the community and support South Florida through this difficult time.”
The airline also noted that it would offer assistance to the Parkland community through its Family Assistance Center, which would book the free air travel and also connect travelers with free ground transportation via Lyft.
The airline is also hosting a blood drive, in tandem with its partner, the Florida Panthers, at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, on Thursday, February 22 from 12 – 7 p.m.
While JetBlue calls itself (and has trademarked the expression) New York’s Hometown Airline™, it also runs a major operation out of Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, Florida, with 81 departures to 35 destinations, including numerous international ones, from the region.
