Virgin America has exciting news for business travelers and its base of tech-forward fliers.
The airline has announced the fleetwide rollout of Gogo's ATG-4 Wi-Fi service following the completion of installation on its Airbus A319 plane "Jane." The enhanced service is now available on all 53 of Virgin America's Airbus A320 aircraft.
The new Wi-Fi service will provide passengers with increased bandwidth and faster browsing speeds thousands of feet off the ground.
In a press release, the Silicon Valley-based airline claims the new service will allow guests to experience peak speeds of 9.8 Mbps, which is more than three times the speed of the first generation of inflight Wi-Fi.
Virgin America became the first airline to offer Gogo Inflight Wi-Fi service on every flight five years ago, but continues to pioneer the amenity.
"Even though Virgin America was the first airline to offer fleetwide Wi-Fi in 2009 – and still today remains the only domestic airline to offer Wi-Fi access on every aircraft in its fleet – our goal is to continue to innovate and stay ahead of the competition," said Virgin America senior vice president of technical operations Mark Bianchi.
"Our team looks forward to reaching the milestone this week of becoming the first airline to install Gogo’s enhanced ATG-4 service across our entire fleet of 53 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. This upgrade is the latest in a series of investments aimed at keeping our tech-forward travelers more connected, productive and entertained at 35,000 feet," Bianchi added.
Below is a time-lapse video of the Gogo service installation:
"Virgin America remains on the cutting edge of offering the best experiences to its passengers and we are excited to continue to work with them on creating a better Wi-Fi experience," said Gogo regional president Dave Bijur.
"ATG-4 has had a significant impact on the market and we continue to see positive results from this newer technology."
Guests can celebrate Virgin America and Gogo's milestone by sharing photos of their onboard experiences on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #OfficeInTheSky. Participants will have a chance to win a handful of prizes, including a round-trip main cabin flight for two.
