After nearly two decades’ suspension, Amtrak is set to revive a vital train route connecting Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, bringing fresh energy to the Gulf Coast's rail transportation network.

The national rail operator recently received approval to restart its train service along this route, which will once again allow passengers to travel through many scenic coastal towns of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, providing both practical transportation and picturesque views.

This stretch of track was last used by Amtrak back in 2005 as part of its larger Sunset Limited line, but service was shut down when Hurricane Katrina wrought devastation in the region in August of that year. During the nearly 20 intervening years, legislators and rail officials have remained undecided about whether or not the route should be reopened.

However, the project recently gained new momentum when the Mobile City Council, in conjunction with its port authority, approved a $3 million funding allocation on August 6, providing the final piece of the financial puzzle needed to kickstart the defunct rail service. This extra push supplements a substantial federal grant of $178.4 million from the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program, alongside endowments from the states of Louisiana and Mississippi.

"With the funding in place, this train can roll soon, and it will have a great return on investment and a tremendous impact in connecting people with jobs and education opportunities, boosting our local economies, and supporting our growing tourism industry in our coastal cities," Knox Ross, the chair of the Southern Rail Commission, said in a statement.

Once it’s again operational, the train service will run twice daily, making stops in four Mississippi cities—Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis—along its journey from Mobile to New Orleans. The ride will offer passengers scenic views of the Gulf of Mexico and the region's estuaries, including Lake Pontchartrain, and access to quaint coastal towns along the route.

Although there is not yet any official timeline for the resumption of service, officials would like to reboot the line by February 2025 to align with such major events as Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans and The Big Easy’s iconic Mardi Gras celebrations.

Local communities along the route, particularly smaller towns like Pascagoula, are eagerly awaiting the train’s return in hopes that it will encourage local tourism. “We anticipate a significant boost in tourism, as visitors will now have a convenient and scenic way to reach Pascagoula,” Susannah Northrop, executive director of Main Street Pascagoula, told Conde Nast Traveler. “This rail connection will allow us to showcase our city’s attractions and hospitality to a new wave of tourists who may not have considered visiting before.”

In Pascagoula, which is home to slightly more than 21,000 people, the train station's proximity to the downtown area will enable visitors to easily walk to local shops, restaurants and hotels, and take in views of the Pascagoula River. “This development is a game-changer for Pascagoula and the entire Gulf Coast,” Northrop said. “We’re eager to welcome train travelers and provide them with an unforgettable experience, whether they’re here for a day trip or an extended stay.”

However, there are still challenges to overcome before the rail service can be fully reinstated. Additional track construction in Mobile is required to accommodate overnight parking for the train so that it doesn’t disrupt freight operations and that will require the relocation of utilities. Amtrak is hopeful that construction can begin by late October, setting the stage for a relaunch out of the route in the first or second quarter of 2025.

Other details, such as the official name of the train line and the cost of fares have yet to be determined, but Amtrak hopes to make those announcements over the coming months.
