Beverage packages on Carnival Cruise Line have become more expensive.

The cruise company increased the cost of drinks packages by 16 percent, according to Travel Weekly, making the change quietly without publishing any official notice.

The cruise line will now charge $82.54 per day for its Cheers! drink package, no matter what the length of the cruise. That amount includes an 18 percent gratuity.

This is in contrast to the $70.74 per day that Carnival Cruise Line previously charged guests for cruises of at least six nights. Meanwhile, guests on sailings that were five days or less were already paying $82.54 and that cost has not been altered, per Travel Weekly.

Carnival did not make an official announcement or offer any advance warning that a price hike was looming. Had there been notice, travelers may have been able to purchase drink packages in advance, at the lower price, before changes were rolled out.

A Carnival Cruise Line representative told Travel Weekly that the price increases will help cover expenses, but did not provide any comment regarding the lack of notice surrounding the changes.

"We're proud of the quality and value a Carnival cruise vacation provides our guests. Recent nominal price adjustments to help cover higher costs and our investments in onboard offerings allow us to continue providing the high-quality experiences our guests know and love," a cruise line spokesman told Travel Weekly.

The drinks available when purchasing the Cheers! Package will not change, according to Travel Weekly. The package allows cruisers to have beer, wine by the glass priced at less than $20, cocktails, zero-proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffee, hot tea, bottled water and other nonalcoholic bottled beverages. The package limits cruisers to 15 alcoholic drinks each day.
