Carnival Corporation & plc is bringing its fresh meal donation program to Latin America for the first time.
The company signed memoranda of understanding with food banks and community partners in Mexico, Honduras and the Dominican Republic, becoming the first cruise company to sign formal meal donation agreements with these organizations.
The food banks are part of the Global FoodBanking Network.
Through its meal donation program, which started in 2017, Carnival Corporation donates extra prepared and unserved meals from its ships to a network of local partners for distribution to families and communities in need. It’s part of the company’s strategy to cut down on food waste while also helping to fight food insecurity in communities it visits.
To date, the program has helped deliver more than 300,000 unserved meals to support community partners.
With the addition of three new ports, the program will now operate in 19 destinations around the globe.
Expanding the meal donation program into Latin America is a way to give back to “the amazing ports and destinations who warmly welcome our guests into their communities and make their visits so memorable," says Vicky Rey, vice president of government affairs for Latin America for Carnival Corporation.
She adds: “Our goal is to help feed families and children who may not have a hot meal to eat every day by donating healthy and delicious meals we prepared but did not serve onboard."
