Heavy rains caused a pipe to burst on a Carnival Cruise Line ship last weekend, causing flooding in some staterooms, reports USA Today.

Carnival Sunrise was on its way back to Miami from the Caribbean on Friday night and early Saturday morning when the vessel ran into some bad weather. Some areas of the ship—including guest cabins—faced flooding after a pipe burst because of the rain.

The flooding affected the ship’s next departure.

“Some staterooms were taken out of service for Saturday's departure as our team completed clean up and replaced carpet,” said Matt Lupoli, a Carnival Cruise Line spokesman, in a statement to USA Today. “Those guests who were not able to sail were provided full refunds, a future cruise credit and received overnight accommodations if they needed them.”

Passenger Rachel Cox was asleep in her cabin on Deck 10 with her family when she heard someone pounding on the door at roughly 2 a.m. Saturday. She awoke to find between two to four inches of water pooling on the floor, she told USA Today.

A crew member instructed Cox and her family members to grab their belongings and leave the room, she said. They headed toward the ship’s Liquid Lounge.

“We're literally running down the stairwells, and as we are, (on) every single floor water's just coming out of the ceilings, it’s coming up through the floor, we see water on the sides of the walls,” she told USA Today.

The captain came to speak with Cox and other passengers, while crew members gave them blankets and bottled water. They disembarked at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Cruise ships periodically experience flooding due to mechanical issues and storms. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Sensation, had a burst pipe that caused flooding and air conditioning issues in October 2019. And, in May 2023, Carnival Sunshine experienced flooding after sailing through a storm surge. Earlier this year, Royal Caribbean’s ship Serenade of the Seas flooded after sailing through wind and rain off the coast of South America.
