A Louisiana woman was hospitalized after suffering a severe genital injury during a cruise.
According to USA Today, Kirsten Lindsey was visiting Little French Key in Roatan, Honduras, on the third day of a Carnival Cruise Line voyage when she became injured during a rope swing shore excursion.
As she swung, the retrieval line, or tag, attached to the bottom of the rope tightened between her legs.
Lindsey initially thought the injury was minor. But within hours the affected area had become extremely swollen and painful, and Lindsey eventually needed to use a wheelchair to get around the ship.
She initially received $4,000 worth of treatment in the ship’s medical facility before paying $50,000 for an emergency medical evacuation to the United States. Lindsey was taken by ambulance to an airport in Costa Maya, Mexico, where a private medical jet flew her to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Back in the states, Lindsey underwent surgery at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. She has since returned to Louisiana, where she is continuing treatment at CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center in Shreveport. Lindsey is expected to undergo a second surgery.
