August was a busy month for the cruise industry, with cruise lines navigating low water levels on Europe’s rivers, announcing new ships and reaching major milestones.
From a total solar eclipse viewed from the decks of cruise ships to a record-breaking giveaway from Zac Brown Band, here are the biggest cruise news stories you might have missed this month.
Travel Advisors Sound Off on Europe's Low-Water River Cruise Situation
Low water levels continued to affect European river cruises in August, on both the Danube and the Rhine. For travel advisors who sell European river cruises, this summer’s low water levels have put their communication and expectation-setting skills to the test, requiring them to help clients navigate disruptions while also keeping their confidence in river cruising intact.
Disney Cruise Line Returning to New York in Fall 2027
Disney Cruise Line announced this month that it will return to New York City in fall 2027 for the first time since 2023, with Disney Wish scheduled to operate seven special voyages from the city as part of the cruise line’s newly announced fall 2027 and spring 2028 itineraries.
Disney Wish will arrive in New York in late September following its inaugural season in Europe, offering four- to seven-night cruises, including five sailings to Bermuda. The return to New York also marks Disney Cruise Line’s first sailings to New England and Canada’s Atlantic coast in nearly four years. During autumn voyages, Disney Wish will call at Boston; St. John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. From New York, Disney Wish will also operate a five-night sailing to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a stop in Bermuda before beginning a series of Caribbean itineraries from Puerto Rico.
Cruise Passengers Wowed by Total Solar Eclipse
On August 12, a total solar eclipse swept across portions of the Northern Hemisphere, as the Moon passed directly between Earth and the Sun and briefly blocked the Sun’s disk. The path of totality stretched from the Arctic through Greenland and Iceland and across Spain, with the surrounding regions experiencing a partial eclipse.
The event drew millions of skywatchers, including many who watched from cruise ships positioned along the eclipse’s path. With ships able to move into areas offering favorable views—and the open ocean providing an unobstructed horizon—cruising offered a particularly memorable way to experience the brief darkness of totality.

The region delivered 53 percent year-over-year growth in the first half of 2026, including 61 percent growth in travel advisor sourced sales.
"Becoming our largest source market reflects the strength of our travel advisor partnerships and the growing demand across the Americas," says Steve Smotrys, managing director and senior vice president of commercial in the Americas for HX Expeditions. Virgin Voyages Celebrates Biggest Revenue Day in Company History
On August 13, Virgin Voyages recorded its biggest revenue day in history, surpassing its previous Black Friday 2025 record.
The record day was fueled by demand for Virgin Voyages’ first Scandinavia and Baltics season, with five new itineraries sailing from Amsterdam aboard Valiant Lady in summer 2028. Every available cabin sold out shortly after launch. The Northern Europe season alone accounted for more than half of the day’s total revenue, nearly two years before Valiant Lady arrives in the region.
Virgin Voyages announced the new Northern Europe voyages last month, offering its Summer Season Pass for back-to-back cruises in the region. According to the company, the response to the new offerings was immediate. August booking pace jumped from 20 percent above the prior year entering the day to more than 45 percent above it exiting, while the 11-night Arctic Circle voyage emerged as an early standout.
“Breaking a record on a random Thursday in August seems odd until you realize all of the momentum we’ve built over the last eight months,” says Nirmal Saverimuttu, chief executive officer of Virgin Voyages. “It’s pretty incredible, but what excites me most is knowing we’re now the go-to brand for anyone traveling without kids.”
