Holland America Line Mourns the Loss of Joska, a Beloved Service Animal and Frequent Cruiser

Holland America Line executives and crew members are mourning the loss of Joska, a beloved service dog who spent much of her life onboard the company’s cruise ships.

Joska, a black Labrador, was the faithful companion of Cornelia and Cornelis Marinussen, who are both legally blind. Joska dutifully accompanied them on dozens of cruises and had become a fixture among Holland America Line’s employees.

She was the first service animal to ever be awarded Holland America Line’s 5-Star Mariner status, as well as the Platinum Medallion for spending more than 700 cumulative days at sea.

Joska accompanied the Marinussens to destinations like  the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Alaska. She also attended Holland America Line’s 150th anniversary celebration in Rotterdam in April 2023.

“Joska’s bright spirit was beloved by everyone who met her,” says Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line. “We'll always remember her playing and engaging with our crew and guests, as well as her serious and conscientious efforts while on the job. She will be deeply missed. Our thoughts go out to the Marinussens in this difficult time.”
