Sometimes shipbuilding schedules are challenging to keep on time as Hurtigruten is discovering with its new Roald Amundsen. Originally slated for launch in October 2018, the vessel will now set sail in 2019.
When reached for a comment, Hurtigruten provided the following statement to TravelPulse:
"We are sorry to confirm that the delivery and introduction of the world's most advanced, modern and environmentally friendly expedition ship, MS Roald Amundsen, will be delayed until 2019.
"Kleven yard, where the highly advanced vessel is currently under construction, has informed us that due to the complexity of the project, they will need more time to complete the vessel and will not be able to deliver her on schedule."
Complexities may include a number of innovative features like hybrid propulsion from partial electric battery power and a specially designed Rolls Royce wave-piercing bow.
The cruise line also indicated that displaced passengers will get a full refund, extending to flight cancellation costs, as well as discounts on alternative Hurtigruten expedition voyages.
As in most cases, the wait will likely be worth it as the Roald Amundsen looks to be a real stunner, especially with enclosed and opened observation decks immediately over the bow.
