The World Legacy cruise ship, operated by World Cruises Singapore, lost a crewmember on early Friday morning after a fire broke out in the lounge area on Deck 9. Aboard were 224 passengers, 185 of whom are Singaporeans. There were 388 crew members onboard when the fire occurred. There were no other reported injuries among the crew members or passengers, although at least one outlet reported that four people had been taken to the hospital.
A press release from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said, “The vessel is in a stable condition, and is currently anchored at Raffles Reserved Anchorage. MPA patrol craft, the Police Coast Guard and the SCDF Marine Division are attending to the vessel.”
The Authority also noted that the deceased crew member, an Indonesian national, has been transferred ashore and the Indonesian embassy in Singapore has been informed. It said that a core crew will remain onboard the vessel to conduct safety checks, carry out essential vessel operations, support investigations, and ensure the safe management of the vessel while at anchor.
It was reported that the deceased crew member was a 23-year-old laundry attendant aboard the ship, and identified only by his initials PL. Firefighters found him collapsed in the lobby of Deck 9 and in spite of medical assistance, he was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. with the cause of death as cardiopulmonary arrest secondary to asphyxiation.
