US Urges Americans to Reconsider Travel Through Middle East Amid Security Concerns

The U.S. Mission to the United Arab Emirates is urging Americans to reconsider travel to and through the Middle East amid heightened regional tensions and the potential for further escalation.

In a new security alert issued September 19, 2026, the mission warned travelers of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other disruptions. Americans currently in the region were advised to exercise heightened vigilance and monitor airport and airline operations closely.

The alert also cited hostilities by Iranian-supported Houthis against Saudi Arabia, including attacks involving civilian airports, warning that the conflict could escalate rapidly.

Travelers were advised to confirm flight status directly with airlines or airports before departure, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, monitor local media and follow instructions from local authorities.

The State Department also encouraged U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad to enroll in its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and help facilitate contact during an emergency.
