MSC Cruises and the government of The Bahamas signed a new partnership ushering in a new phase of ecological and infrastructure development for the cruise line’s Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a private island and marine reserve experience.

The marine reserve was previously an industrial sand excavation site, but was abandoned in 2015. It debuted as the cruise line’s private island and marine reserve in 2019 following years of restoration work by the cruise line, in partnership with the Bahamian government.

The new infrastructure and ecological development programme was signed by the Bahamian Prime Minister, The Honorable Philip Davis, and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, The Honorable Chester Cooper, among others.

A large part of the development is the MSC Foundation’s Marine Conservation Center, a base for biologists, coral reef experts and students to conduct important research. Travelers visiting can visit the upcoming pavilions, lecture hall and coral exhibition tanks to learn why coral is such an important part of marine health.

The island is currently home to the Super Coral Program, which conducts research and has a coral nursery onsite. The site also hosts graduate student programs.

Tha plan will also add a third solar farm on the island to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions production, along with an advanced wastewater treatment plant and a broader sustainable landscaping plan.

Guest facilities including excursion centers to help travelers book watersport activities and go on island tours will be introduced in the upgrades, as well as a sea dive and snorkel center, more food and beverage outlets and expanded accommodations to support 280 island staff members — there are currently only accommodations for 150.

MSC also promised to support the LJM Maritime Academy and the University of The Bahamas to enhance training of Bahamians entering maritime careers.
