MSC Cruises is now using facial verification technology for security on its cruise ships.
The cruise line is using a system developed by Neurotechnology, a company based in Vilnius, Lithuania, that specializes in biometric technologies.
MSC Cruises is using the company’s system for its MSC web portal, as well as for its MSC for Me mobile application.
With the technology, passengers can take a photo of their face on their phone or computer during the pre-cruise check-in phase. The image is then saved to MSC Cruises’ onboard systems.
“The captured photo makes the guest easily recognizable by the crew staff,” according to Neurotechnology. “The system ensures good quality and contrast of the face image while ensuring that the passenger is looking straight into the camera and that the face and eyes are not occluded by any object, including hats and sunglasses.”
MSC Cruises decided to begin using the technology to ensure “an even smoother and faster embarkation process,” says Luca Pronzati, chief digital technology officer.
