Costa Maya, one of Mexico's largest cruise ports and an emerging destination, announced that Norwegian Cruise Line's new ship, Norwegian Epic, will make a maiden call to its shores in summer 2010. The 150,000-ton Norwegian Epic is the latest addition to Costa Maya's ship roster, which includes Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, NCL, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean International, P&O Cruises, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Windstar Cruises, MSC Cruises, Ocean Village and Cunard. "After Hurricane Dean struck Costa Maya in 2007, the port worked expeditiously to rebuild and enhance the guest experience offered to all cruise passengers. These improvements included a modified pier to accommodate the newer, larger ships like Epic," said Teofilo Hamui, president of Costa Maya. "We are proud that Norwegian Cruise Line has selected Costa Maya as one of the Epic's year-round ports-of-call, and are confident that its passengers will be enchanted by the area's unspoiled beauty and countless activities."
The 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic will sail year-round from Miami to the Caribbean with alternating weekly calls to Costa Maya. Epic's regularly scheduled calls to Costa Maya is the latest demonstration of the cruise industry's commitment to this destination and its strong post-hurricane return. Since reopening in 2008, Costa Maya has added new guest experiences such as BioMaya Bacalar, a ziplining adventure through the Mayan jungle, and a new boardwalk that lines the beachside town of Mahahual. Costa Maya in October will open a Hard Rock Cafe less than 1,000 feet from the port's main complex.
Located on Mexico's southern Yucatan Peninsula, Costa Maya was the Western Caribbean's first port designed exclusively for the cruise industry. Resembling an ancient Mayan city, Costa Maya is able to accommodate three ships at once, including Epic-class ships. Costa Maya is comprised of three grand pavilions, artisan and luxury shopping areas, a beach club, saltwater pools, restaurants and bars, and the resources to explore the surrounding jungle and coral reefs. Costa Maya was named Seatrade Insider's 2007 Port of the Year. For more information, visit www.costamaya-mexico.com.
