Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has informed guests that one of its most popular ports in Alaska will not be available on some itineraries in 2023. The popular call in Skagway is not physically open to RCCL's Quantum of the Seas since the ship is too large for the port.Instead, the Skagway call will be replaced with Icy Strait Point. Damage from multiple rock slides has made it impossible for ships the size of Quantum of the Seas to dock and they have to divert elsewhere. However, repairs are being made so this change should only be for the remainder of the 2023 Alaska season.“Last season, landslides in Skagway impacted the pier where our ships dock. While repairs have been ongoing, they won’t be ready for two large ships visiting simultaneously,” RCCL said in a letter to guests. “To ensure we provide you with the best experience, we’ve replaced our visit with Icy Strait Point, Alaska.” All excursions booked into Skagway through the cruise line will be refunded. Skagway is an old mining town that is popular with cruisers. Instead, RCCL will replace it with Icy Straight Point as well as an extended stay in the town of Sitka, Alaska. “We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by this,” the letter said. “Nevertheless, we’re excited to sail away with you!” The affected Alaska itineraries were set for May 15 and 22, June 12 and 19, July 10, 17 and 24, and September 11, 2023. Additional itinerary changes are expected.
