After a number of recent drowning incidents onboard cruise ships, the New York Times has penned an article detailing a few tips for begin safe and healthy onboard.
The article focuses particularly on water safety protocols, but also provides tips for other aspects of the cruise experience.
When it comes to water safety, drowning is uncommon and ships are clear as to the risks.
"Signs are always posted that warn passengers to swim at their own risk, similar to what is found at many hotels," the spokeswoman, Cynthia Martinez, wrote in an email to the New York Times. "We have provided our fleet with children's life jackets available at the pool area as an added safety precaution. We still strongly recommend that children not be in the pool area unsupervised."
Cruise Critic's Colleen McDaniel, among other experts, highlighted the need for travelers to keep safety top of mind while cruising, sharing tips on how to do so.
When it comes to water safety, Julie Danziger, a cruise specialist at the New York City travel consultancy Ovation Vacations told the paper: "Either you need to be watching [children] or make sure that if they're going to the pool as part of an activity with the cruise ship's kids club, that there will be an attendant with the group at all times."
