With Valentine's Day merely a few days away, let's take a moment to discuss romantic vacation destinations, shall we?
There are of course, plenty of global locations that have become synonymous with romantic getaways: Paris, France; Italy's Amalfi Coast, the Greek islands. But what if you don't have the time (or the budget) for a long-haul international destination to indulge in a romantic interlude? Are there equally romantic alternatives that don't require a passport?
The answer is a resounding yes. There are numerous destinations that are part of the United States where you can find all of the elements that make for a memorable romantic escape. And we've helpfully rounded up a half-dozen examples.
Each of the places on our list offers a great mix of stellar scenery, fine dining, private places to escape the crowds (beach or secluded hiking), and romantic accommodation options.
If spending quality time traveling and reconnecting with your significant other is on your to-do list, whether for Valentines's Day or at some other point, here are some of the best options for those who want to avoid a passport requirement.
Puerto Rico
Long before Bad Bunny fever reminded the masses why Puerto Rico is so fabulous, this destination was a beloved getaway for romance seekers. First, as a U.S. territory, there's obviously no passport required to visit.
But that's merely one of the reasons it tops our list. Puerto Rico is a destination where couples can spend time exploring lush rainforests (Puerto Rico's El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and one of the island's most beloved natural gems), as well as all manner of beautiful beaches. There's also an abundance of cultural offerings to experience here, as well as historic sites (Puerto Rico has more than 4,000 years of history). Meaning, there's something for couples of all interests.
Romance-seeking visitors will also find plenty of luxe resorts to choose from. One of the top picks? The oceanfront Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. Built in the 1950s and known for its intimate luxury, the property sits on a serene stretch of Puerto Rico coastline and offers private residences along with a spa sanctuary.
Additional top choices include Four Seasons Resort and Residences Puerto Rico and Condado Vanderbilt Hotel.

The U.S. Virgin Islands
If relaxing on a stunning beach is your primary goal for a romantic getaway, the U.S. Virgin Islands deliver. Another U.S. territory, a passport is not required to visit. And even better, it's only a four-hour flight from New York City.
Now let's talk about the beaches, shall we? This destination, made up of St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix, is known for its pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and reefs. (St. John even has a beach named Honeymoon Beach.)
The ease of visiting and the multitude of locations for a romantic stroll on the beach are just a few of the reasons why you might want to plan a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands. There's also vibrant local cuisine, shopping galore, and a rich variety of local carnivals and festivals (check out the calendar of events).
As for accommodations, you'll find a variety of luxe, romantic options, ranging from The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas, to Lovango Resort & Beach Club, St. John.

Sonoma County, California
World-class vineyards and wine tasting, historic charm and dazzling sunsets—there's a lot to love (pun intended) about Sonoma County when it comes to planning a romantic retreat.
Located just 40 miles north of San Francisco (and no passport required..obv) there are many ways to connect with your partner here and enjoy quality time together.
From spa retreats (don't miss Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary) to dining at one of the destination's top romantic restaurants, to reserving a stay in one of Sonoma's cozy romantic lodges. Is it any wonder that Sonoma County has been named one of the best romantic getaways in the United States? (It's also one of the nation's leading sustainable destinations, offering yet another reason why Sonoma is one of our perennial favorites).
Bonus tip: For a truly unforgettable sunset experience here, book a guided horseback ride along the coastal bluffs with Chandler Stables. This will give you a chance to take in sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean as the sun dips below the horizon.
As for places to stay, don't miss the historic Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. A property that dates back to 1927 and oozes Old World charm, the Fairmont Sonoma was just named one of "The 2026 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America for a Romantic Proposal." It doesn't get any better than that.

Sedona, Arizona
Stunning red rock landscapes, outstanding hiking opportunities, horseback riding, hot air balloons — if you and your significant other are the outdoorsy types, it's hard to beat Sedona as an effortless destination that can be visited sans passport requirements. Beyond all of those reasons for visiting, Sedona is also well known as a spa and wellness hotspot and a place where you can enjoy all manner of world-class dining.
As for where to stay, L'Auberge de Sedona is as romantic as it gets. Surrounded by more of those towering red rocks you came to see and set amidst the quiet calm of Oak Creek, L'Auberge de Sedona features a variety of newly renovated, private luxury cottages, some nestled along a creek, others framed by red rock views.
Added bonus: L'Auberge also happens to be home to one of the best spas in Sedona. At L'Apothocary Spa, couples can experience treatments that incorporate raw minerals known for their healing and transformative powers.

Kauai, Hawaii
Hawaii has long attracted a steady stream of romance seekers (especially honeymooners, but let's not get ahead of ourselves). Here's the thing: You don't have to follow the crowds, which can be found on Oahu or Maui, to experience the romance of a Hawaiian vacation. Instead, opt for Kauai, which is known to be less crowded, while still offering the stunning scenery that makes Hawaii so popular.
Another good choice for couples who enjoy the outdoors, Kauai offers everything from hiking and zip lining to helicopter tours. For still another option, book an outing on a catamaran or a kayak.
As for accommodations, the oceanfront Ko'a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach was named one of the most romantic resorts in the world.
Of course, as part of the United States, no passport is needed to visit Kauai. And flights from the West Coast to Hawaii are plentiful.

Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
Hopefully, none of us need a geography lesson, but suffice it to say Alaska is yet another stunning destination that does not require much effort to visit (meaning no passport and no international flight)
And here's why we like it as a romantic choice: Kenai Peninsula offers a uniquely different alternative to all of the sun-drenched locations on this list. It's a place where couples can go river rafting, spend days wildlife viewing, and evenings enjoying world-class restaurants. There's also nothing better than a moonlit stroll under the starry skies here.
When it comes to accommodations, don't miss the Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge to truly get away from it all and enjoy quality time together in nature.
A remote retreat in Alaska's Resurrection Bay on Fox Island, the lodge is only accessible by boat. The eight waterfront cabins here serve as your home base for an island escape filled with such activities as cruising through Resurrection Bay (be sure to watch the skies for eagles, puffins and other seabirds as you go), daily guided kayaking, and opportunities to hike, fish or simply explore the island. When you're ready to relax, settle into a beachfront wood-fired sauna.
Before you depart, there will be a cruise through Kenai Fjords National Park, providing an unforgettable look at the towering glaciers and perhaps even spying whales, seals and other marine wildlife. All of this without a passport to a far-flung location.
