The Acapulco Destination Marketing expressed its regrets concerning the events that recently took place in Acapulco. A police action against drug gangs resulted in a shootout that killed more than 15 people. Tourism officials confirmed that no domestic or international tourists were involved or injured in these incidents. Despite reports to the contrary appearing in the U.S. press, it is important to note that the area where these unfortunate events took place, known as "Traditional Acapulco," the area where Acapulco's tourism first flourished in the 1950s, is primarily a residential neighborhood today, located on the opposite end of the city from the main tourism districts of Acapulco, the Diamante and Golden zones. As with all countries around the world, city, state and federal government offices throughout Mexico are constantly working to improve security measures and emergency services to safeguarded both tourists and residents. The local government in Acapulco said it continues to work in conjunction with state and federal authorities to increase the city's resources in order to ensure that all tourist areas within Acapulco remain safe, well lit and clean, in accordance with new safety measures that went into effect throughout the city in March 2009.

As a popular vacation destination for Canadian and U.S. travelers, Acapulco said it is committed to the safety and well-being of its visitors and to offering a flawless travel experience. Acapulco continues to distinguish itself from other tourism destinations with its timeless beauty, upscale services, innovative cuisine and a plethora of ambitious new developments, such as the Banyan Tree Cabo Marques, W Las Brisas Hotel and Grupo Habita's Hotel and Boca Chica. In addition to this spectacular new developments, Acapulco also welcomes the new shopping destination of La Isla Shopping Village, which opened its door in December 2008 in the Diamante zone as well as the renovated Port of Acapulco Terminal, which greets visitors arriving via cruise ships with a fresh new look and increased security measures in 2009. Despite recent events, all daily tourism services as well as local businesses remain open and are fully operational. In a show of support and in the effort to lure visitors back to Acapulco, many hotels and cultural attractions are offering special incentives and travel packages.
