The U.S. State Department updated its Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas on Tuesday, publishing new guidance to its advisory summary for the island country.
Travelers remain advised to exercise increased caution in the Bahamas due to the threat of crime.
"Violent crime, including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults, can occur anywhere in The Bahamas," the advisory states. "Most crime occurs in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. Stay alert in the 'Over the Hill' area in Nassau, south of Shirley Street, where gangs have killed residents."
"Stay alert in vacation rental properties, especially where private security is not present."
The July 28 update also includes key insights into potential threats involving jet skis, boats and licenses as well as beach safety, traveling with weapons and ammunition and hurricanes.

"Boating is not well regulated," the State Department warns. "Due to safety risks, U.S. government employees are not allowed to use or rent jet skis and personal watercraft from independent operators on New Providence and Paradise Islands."
"Firearms and ammunition are illegal, including small quantities in carry-on bags or luggage. Police strictly enforce these laws, even at the airport when travelers are leaving," the department added. "Travelers with firearms or ammunition can face arrest, jail time, and fines."
"Authorities have detained U.S. citizens for several days or more after finding firearms or ammunition, preventing them from leaving."
Travelers to the Bahamas are encouraged to always be aware of their surroundings and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to quickly receive important updates and alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate.
Tuesday's update comes on the heels of similar travel advisory updates for the islands of Turks and Caicos and Saint Lucia.
