The Cayman Islands government has inked an agreement to develop a 200-room hotel and 75 private condominiums, with construction slated to begin in one year.
The project will be constructed in partnership with developer John David Layton and built on Beach Bay in the Bodden Town district on Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands.
Plans call for a branded hotel that will include a spa, restaurants, bars and retail space, said a report from the government-run Cayman News Service. The Bodden Town development will help Cayman Island tourism stakeholders launch a new Grand Cayman resort area beyond Seven Mile Beach and George Town, said Alden McLaughlin, the country's premier.
"With this development, our tourists will be able to experience a new and vibrant part of Grand Cayman," he said. McLaughlin added, "This is the first major hotel and condo development for Bodden Town, helping us fill out needed hotel room stock [and] giving our visitors a tranquil experience away from the hustle and bustle of George Town and Seven Mile Beach."
The development will "greatly enhance" the Cayman Islands' tourism offerings, said Moses Kirkconnell, the country's tourism minister, and add new inventory to the country's 5,200 hotel rooms. The developers have discussed the development with successive Cayman Islands administrations for several years but "have now reached agreement with the government on concessions and are ready to begin submitting planning applications," according to the report.
