The Hotel and Tourism Association of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores) officially inaugurated the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE) 2026, established as the Caribbean’s leading tourism trade platform. From this stage, the country showcases its regional leadership and reaffirms tourism as a strategic pillar of the national economy.

The 2026 edition brings together more than 200 companies from over 20 source markets, over 300 international buyers, and 120 exhibition stands representing the diversity of the Dominican destination. In this context, more than 8,000 business meetings are expected to take place—over 5,000 already confirmed—which will directly impact hotel occupancy, visitor arrivals, and foreign exchange generation.

During the opening ceremony, Asonahores’ First Vice President, Javier Tejada, highlighted DATE’s role as a key platform for driving the sector: “DATE is the country’s main tourism commercialization tool. Here, deals are finalized that translate into thousands of additional visitors each year, strengthening hotel occupancy and generating a direct impact on the Dominican economy.”

Tejada emphasized that tourism continues to lead the country’s economic growth: “The Dominican Republic was the most visited destination in the Caribbean in 2025, with over 11.7 million visitors, and we project reaching between 12 and 12.5 million in 2026, driven by the expansion of air routes and market diversification.”

In terms of employment, he noted that the sector generates more than 800,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs, consolidating itself as one of the main drivers of the labor market.

Tejada also addressed tourism’s multiplier effect on other productive sectors: “This sector purchases more than $3 billion annually from the local market, impacting agribusiness, transportation, construction, and SMEs. It is a comprehensive engine of development for the entire country.”

Asonahores’ Executive Vice President, Aguie Lendor, focused her remarks on the sector’s strategic vision, challenges, and social impact: “DATE is a country platform that connects our tourism offering with key international markets, generating real growth opportunities for the entire industry.”

Regarding the sector’s outlook, she stated: “We must continue to invest in diversifying the tourism product, strengthening segments such as health, sports, cultural, and nature tourism, while addressing challenges such as environmental sustainability and workforce training.”

She also highlighted the importance of education and training: “Service quality directly influences visitor spending and loyalty. That is why we promote training programs that impact thousands of employees each year, in partnership with academic institutions.”

Lendor emphasized the role of women in the sector: “Nearly 60% of the tourism workforce is made up of women. Promoting their professional development is key to strengthening the industry and generating greater social equity.”

She also underscored the value of gastronomy as an essential part of the tourism experience: “A significant portion of visitor spending is allocated to food and beverages, positioning Dominican cuisine as a core component of the experience. Dominican gastronomy is a key differentiator that supports local producers and enriches the visitor experience.”

The DATE 2026 agenda also includes keynote presentations, international press conferences, networking spaces, and cultural experiences that highlight Dominican identity, along with the participation of major commercial partners from the Americas and Europe.

DATE 2026 is sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Therrestra, Arajet, CEPM, Barceló Bávaro Convention Center, Meliá Hotels International, Coco Bongo, Dominicania, World of Hyatt Inclusive Collection, Dreams Cap Cana Resort & Spa, Banco Popular, Grupo Puntacana, SolBus, Panaca, Banco BHD, Coral Hospitality Corp, and Renny Travel.
