An already surreal winter for Northeast travelers doesn't appear to be winding down anytime soon as meteorologists turn their attention from Winter Storm Neptune to the latest concern, Winter Storm Octavia.
Octavia has already caused significant travel woes by bringing snow and ice to the Rockies, Plains and Ohio Valley. But the storm now has its sights set on the Mid-Atlantic and reeling Northeast region.
One day after Neptune brought travel to a standstill along the I-95 corridor, leading to more than 2,000 flight cancellations nationwide on Sunday, Octavia has already assisted in causing more than 1,000 flight cancellations nationwide as of Monday morning.
According to FlightAware.com, a majority of those canceled flights are at Nashville International Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Memphis International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
In addition to heavy snow in places, Octavia is bringing treacherous ice to Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina and other places, which has subsequently led to a plethora of flight cancellations.
Nashville has already canceled more than half of its scheduled flights for Monday, while Charlotte Douglas stands at 200-plus cancellations as of 11 a.m. ET.
Boston Logan International Airport is reporting 60 total cancellations on Monday, but that's a mighty improvement from Sunday, when Boston Logan's 499 total cancellations accounted for nearly a quarter of the day's canceled flights nationwide.
Looking ahead, expect travel conditions to deteriorate in the Mid-Atlantic as Octavia moves into the region on Monday night. As the storm continues to move eastward overnight, conditions are expected to worsen in other parts of the Northeast into Tuesday before Octavia eventually moves off the coast by midweek.
