Grand Canyon Visitor Dies After Fall From Cliff

An unidentified 67-year-old California man died Wednesday at the Grand Canyon National Park after he fell over the South Rim into the canyon.

According to The Associated Press, park rangers were called to the South Rim around noon after the man disappeared over the cliff, with officials bringing in the park's helicopter and technical rescue team to aid in the search.

The man's body was discovered east of the Yavapai Geology Museum at about 2 p.m. local time.

The National Park Service is working with the Coconino County Medical Examiner to investigate the incident, which was the third visitor death in the area in the last three weeks.

Last month, two visitors died in the Grand Canyon area in separate incidents, including one man who fell over the edge of the rim while trying to take pictures at Grand Canyon West. In total, the park reported 17 fatalities last year.

The National Park Service continues to encourage travelers to stay on marked trails and keep a safe distance from cliffs and other dangerous areas to fully enjoy their visit to the Grand Canyon and all other parks.
