For archeological enthusiasts and historical buffs, it's
just like having a new place to explore.
The Mayan ruins of Uxmal, really second only in popularity
among Mexican ruins to Chichen Itza, are sure to grow in stature now that the
Mexican government has decided to open up new sections of the area, according
to the Cancun
Sun.
These new sections are expected to be open by the end of the
year.
The soon-to-be-opened sections are not 'new,' per se. After
all, they've been around for thousands of years. But some of them were
previously inaccessible to tourists.
So Uxmal is being spruced up.
The newly opened accessible sites include a cemetery with
human skulls and a fertility center.
However, it should be noted that tourists' ability to climb
the stairs to the famous temple will soon disappear. This is one of the most
famous pyramids in the world.
With the new accessibility that makes the site more open,
officials are expecting the 350,000 annual visitors to double and perhaps even
triple.
Uxmal is about 60 miles from the thriving city of Merida.
Some portions of the ruins have yet to undergo renovation and will be in a more
historical condition.
Last week, TravelPulse explained how more United
States-based airlines are flying direct
routes to Merida.
