Mexico
is one of the top favorite destinations for travelers from North America. This
is especially true for Mexico City and resorts like Cancún, Los Cabos, and
Puerto Vallarta, which are increasingly popular with visitors.
This
was clear at the recent Tianguis Turístico Acapulco 2026, a marketplace attended
by more than 1,300 companies from 33 countries, along with 1,400 buyers who had
over 64,000 business meetings. The results of this new edition of Mexico’s main
tourism industry event were 137% higher than in 2024, with sales exceeding 60
million dollars.
Josefina
Rodríguez, Mexico's Minister of Tourism, said this event is the most important
business meeting for the country's tourism industry, and the results show that
both national and international markets trust Mexico’s destinations. She also
highlighted strong growth in domestic flights and travel connections. “This
benefits both foreign and Mexican travelers, who can now visit places that are
not usually as crowded. This allows faster and easier access to faraway
destinations and unique experiences,” she assured.
In
this context, the Plan México Turismo (Mexico Tourism Plan) is being carried
out. Its goal is to make Mexico the fifth-most-visited country in the world by
2030, with more non-beach destinations. The plan promotes community tourism,
Maya World, Maya Train, and Magical Towns.
The
Minister of Tourism also announced that the airline Viva Aerobus will soon
launch seven new routes from Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA),
located a few miles from Mexico City. These routes will connect to U.S. cities
such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Miami, and
Orlando. On the other hand, Volaris also announced 15 routes to the United
States, and Aeroméxico added a connection to Philadelphia, plus a new route
between Atlanta and San Luis Potosí, among many others that currently operate.
Thanks
to these new routes, travelers from North America will have more options to
enjoy new destinations in Mexico. The Mexican government and private companies
are investing in these places, especially in the states of Quintana Roo,
Nayarit, Jalisco, Baja California Sur, Guerrero, Nuevo León, Hidalgo, Baja
California, Sonora, and Yucatan.
The
Tianguis Turístico Acapulco 2026 brought together key people from the
government, international organizations, development banks, commercial banks,
and the private sector. Their goal was to open new paths to boost tourism
investment in Mexico.
Acapulco:
Leading Mexico’s Tourism Growth
The
iconic port of Acapulco hosts the Tianguis Turístico every two years, which is
the country’s most important business event for the tourism industry. Acapulco
is recovering well after being hit by two hurricanes in recent years, and today
this Pacific coast destination is once again one of the favorites on the
continent for its natural beauty, history, high-class hospitality, and wonderful
gastronomy.
Acapulco’s
food competes internationally with restaurants like Punta Sirena, which
combines the bay’s natural beauty with the cooking of Chef Eduardo Palazuelos, one
of the top chefs of modern Mexican cuisine. At Punta Sirena, he serves the
traditional pescadoalatalla (grilled fish) among
many other refined seafood dishes.
For
those who enjoy nature and want to learn about local plants and animals, the
Acapulco Botanical Garden Esther Pliego de Salinas is a must-see place. Located
high on a mountain overlooking the bay, this garden has over 1,200 documented
species among about 10,000 trees and plants, including native, local, and
ornamental plants.

For
those feeling nostalgic, Acapulco keeps the tradition of the La Quebrada cliff
divers. La Quebrada is a rocky area at the tip of the bay where visitors can
watch an amazing diving show while eating dinner at El Mirador Restaurant,
after enjoying a typical Pacific sunset. Another great spot to admire sunsets
is Las Gaviotas II Restaurant, located at the highest point of the Panoramic
Highway, which offers the best view of the magnificent bay.
Also,
people interested in historic places can visit the San Diego Fort, located near
downtown, where guided tours are available. The site includes the Acapulco
Historical Museum, which displays pirate weapons, tools, ornaments and clothing
from the colonial era, as well as pre-Columbian collections, among other
exhibits.
Nature
lovers can also take a boat ride on Coyuca Lagoon, a paradise located 20 miles from
Acapulco. There, tourists can try fresh fish dishes, receive wellness
treatments like mud masks, and, during the right season, help release baby sea
turtles into the ocean.
Finally,
for those seeking a quiet place with a colonial feel, the Magical Town of Taxco,
125 miles from Acapulco, is a great option. Here, visitors will find nice
hotels, great food, and rich cultural traditions. The famous Santa Prisca
Cathedral and the silver craft workshops are must-see places in this wonderful
destination. In addition to its traditional religious festivals held throughout
the year, Taxco also hosts the Taco Festival. During this event, restaurants
from all over Mexico offer visitors a variety of taco recipes from the country's
32 states.
