WHY IT RATES:Experience Southern hospitality with several new developments in Montgomery, Alabama -Eric Bowman, TravelPulse Senior Editor
Montgomery will enter 2018 with a host of new developments on the horizon. Known for its Southern hospitality and its revitalized downtown, this riverfront capital city was the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement and has established itself as a landmark Deep South destination. Increased investment has added to the destination's growing reputation as a burgeoning hotspot for both visitors and those looking to make the city their permanent home.
"We're entering an exciting period in our city's history," shares Vice President of Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Dawn Hathcock. "With a world-class monument opening next year and more interest than ever before in some of the historical sites in our city, we are proud of all of the new development in the works. Plans for these new properties and attractions prove that we are moving into a bright future as we gear up for our bicentennial in 2019 and welcome many new visitors to our destination for the very first time."
Below is an overview of new developments occurring in Montgomery:
- Opening in late 2017, a 1920s era Kress Department Store will be transformed into Kress on Dexter, a mixed-use facility located at 39 Dexter Avenue in historic downtown Montgomery. The building will contain shopping, dining, office space and luxury apartments overlooking Dexter Avenue. The renovation has kept intact the beauty of the original structure while adding modern comforts. For more information, go to kressondexter.com/
- In January 2018, fans of literary legends F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald will get a chance to stay in a house in which the famous couple once lived. Located on the site of the F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald Museum in historic Cloverdale, an Airbnb has been established where lovers of literature and the jazz age can stay overnight and enjoy modern amenities while enjoying this historic residence. - April 2018 will see the grand opening of the Equal Justice Initiative's Memorial to Peace and Justice and The Legacy Museum. Located on the outskirts of downtown Montgomery, these two institutions will open to the public for the very first time. The memorial, located on a six-acre park, is a sacred space for reflection on racial terrorism in America, and the museum, located close by, will use interactive media, sculpture, film, and exhibits to immerse and educate visitors. - Located just a block from the Equal Justice Initiative's memorial, 2019 will see the opening of a Hilltop Suites and Spa. This 80-room hotel will contain multiple restaurants, a spa and a rooftop bar. The long-vacant Hilltop Arms apartment building will be the site for this new hotel.
- The former Regions Bank building in historic Cloverdale is being converted into Vintage Café, with an opening scheduled for early 2018. With a space designed by Tom Blount, who helped create Alabama Shakespeare Festival, this neighborhood café will serve up gourmet coffee along with salads and sandwiches.
