Officials are urging tourists in the popular vacation paradise of Cancun to be cautious.
It’s not violence.
It’s Mother Nature.
Five people in the last two weeks have lost their lives on the beaches of the popular vacation mecca. They are the victims of drowning.
These tragedies were in spite of extra lifeguard support as Cancun is seeing record amounts of tourists this winter.
Juli Cesar Gomez Torres, Secretary of Citizen Security of Quintan Roo, said: “The beaches, although they are very beautiful, the sea, sometimes with the waves and the wind, does not have the best conditions to enter. … However, there are people who venture and, well, these situations happen.”
Most beaches use a warning flag system. When in doubt about the meaning of the flags, check with a lifeguard. The flags are subject to change pending the weather conditions. So check often.
Think of a stoplight. Green means go, yellow means exercise caution and red is a warning that the ocean is off limits. Black means the beach is closed entirely.
Back in November, officials urged caution ahead of the high season and announced they'd be adding more lifeguard safety support
Officials say awareness is key, but most beaches in the hotel zone are relatively safe.
For those heading to Cancun anytime soon, here are some other fun things to do in the hotel zone beyond the beach.
