San Diego will celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8 by offering several activities and events throughout the county, June 5 to 8. Themed "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish," the 2010 World Oceans Day is especially important to the region because it will honor former La Jolla resident Dr. Seuss and the 50th anniversary of this classic children's book.
Among the activities, the Omni San Diego Hotel in downtown San Diego will offer an Oceans of Life package from June 1 through Dec. 30. For a $169 nightly room rate, the package will include a copy of the book and two tickets to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla. In addition, 10 percent of guests' hotel bills will be donated to the San Diego Oceans Foundation. The Grand Del Mar Resort & Spa in Del Mar will host an afternoon of family-friendly fun on June 5 with a coloring contest and other children's activities, entertainment, complimentary cookies, homemade lemonade, and a reading of the book.
Surf Diva in La Jolla will host a celebratory paddle-out with a reading of the book on the Pacific Ocean on June 5. Hornblower Cruises & Events will offer free, Seuss-inspired face painting on June 5 for children on all regularly scheduled, green-themed, narrated harbor cruises around San Diego Bay. Hornblower captains will also play a reading of the book at the conclusion of each cruise.
The San Diego Zoo will host a snow sculpture building contest at the new Polar Bear Plunge exhibit, and the winner will be chosen by the zoo's polar bears, on June 5. The zoo also will also have a local celebrity and its national spokesperson present a reading of the book at the Wegeforth Bowl with help from California Sea lions. Sea Life Aquarium will host a World Oceans Day party on June 5 with Dr. Seuss- and fish-themed games, arts and crafts, along with a reading of the book presented underwater.
The Corvette Diner & Gamers Garage on Point Loma will hold a reading on June 8 by local news anchor Mike Castalucci and will offer a Wear Blue Tell Two promotion. For every diner who wears the color blue and mentions Wear Blue Tell Two to his or her server, the restaurant will donate a portion of the food and beverage sales to The Ocean Project. On June 6, Cooks Confab, which is committed to educating the public about sustainable seafood with fish-friendly food events throughout the county, will host Fish! Forum and Fish!, a free Q&A seminar on fisheries of the future, followed by a dinner reception hosted by Chef de Cusine Brian Sinott at the Hotel del Coronado's 1500 Ocean restaurant.
On June 8 and 9, the San Diego International Airport will distribute free souvenirs as part of the World Oceans Day celebration. Guests can visit the information booth in Terminals 1 and 2 and ask an airport ambassador for their free gift.
