Mexico City is the capital, largest, and most populous city in Mexico. With its countless museums, historical landmarks, and cultural attractions it’s an exciting prospect for tourists. But we found that there’s much more to Mexico City.

From culinary sensations to adrenaline-rush adventures, there’s something for every type of tourist to enjoy. Looking for the best things to do in Mexico City? Read on and discover our top picks.

Explore Aztec Landmarks

We couldn’t start our trip to Mexico on a better note than exploring its Aztec heritage. The Aztecs were the Meso-American indigenous people who lived in Mexico even up until the time of the Spanish Conquest.

One of the most famous Aztec ruins is known as Teotihuacan and it’s located just an hour outside Mexico City. Take a guided tour and learn more about this fascinating part of Mexican history.

Balloon Ride Over The City Of The Gods

Before leaving the ancient ruins and pyramids (also known as the City of the Gods) of Teotihuacan behind, take a hot air balloon ride.

It’s always an eye-opener how much more you can learn about an area from a higher vantage point. And a balloon ride is a thrilling way to get a bird’s eye view of this archaeological wonder.

Think of the amazing photos you’ll take to share with your friends back home.

Xochimilco Boat Ride

For a fun outing that’ll delight young and old alike, head to the southern extreme of the city, to the vast canal system known as Xochimilco. Once a lake, this waterway is surrounded by wild gardens filled with an abundance of indigenous plants, birds, and animals.

Guided tours in traditional trajinera boats offer a unique perspective on Mexico City. We had a great time on board, sampling the local tequila and beer.

Art Lovers Unite

Frida Kahlo, the painter so well-known for her colorful self-portraits, was a native of Mexico City. So it comes as no surprise that this world-renowned artist is celebrated here.

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Museo Frida Kahlo (Frida Kahlo Museum). Undeterred by the unassuming blue exterior, we made our way inside to be greeted by colorful and quirky exhibits.

Even if you’re not familiar with her work, you’ll appreciate the love that went into creating this shrine for one of Mexico’s most famous artists.

Cycle The City

Cycling is good exercise and an ideal way to get around and see the sights. We highly recommend cycling around Parque Alameda, a beautiful urban park in Mexico City. But go early in the morning. It’s quite popular and fills up during the day with both tourists and locals.

Enjoy the water features or just sit on one of the benches and do some people-watching in this beautiful slice of nature right in the heart of the city.

If roughing it on a mountain bike is more your style, head to Desierto de los Leones, a national park on the outskirts of Mexico City.

Feast Like The Gods

Quesadillas, Enchiladas, or Tacos, it’s all here. You may think you know Mexican food, but your taste buds are in for some new sensations when you enjoy these favorites in Mexico City. Rediscover iconic Mexican foods, and discover new ones, on a Historic Center Food Tour.

It filled our minds with knowledge and our stomachs with delight. Don’t plan too much sightseeing right after though. You’ll need a little siesta after feasting on all the local delicacies.

Go Rock Climbing

Just because Mexico City isn’t coastal, there are still plenty of opportunities for some fun in the sun. How about a day of rock climbing?

Rock climbing is popular in Mexico City with options including indoor courses and outdoor rock climbing adventures in beautiful surrounding scenery.

We loved the outdoor course in Jilotepec, but there are several to choose from. Most include refreshments, and all include climbing gear.

Begin Your Mexico City Adventure Today

Mexico may be best known for carnivals, street food, and tequila, but we had some epic adventures of all kinds in Mexico City. By now you must be excited to start your very own Mexico City tour. So why wait? Book your trip today and have a vacation to remember in the land of the Aztecs.
