New solutions to high transportation costs for travelers arriving through Cancun International Airport are going to be considered in the near future, according to news from the Secretary of Quintana Roo Tourism.
The secretary, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, announced a new improvement operation to solve long-standing problems visitors arriving at Cancun International Airport face following their arrival. One of these problems is the high cost of taxi rides, which are known to be inflated.
According to Riviera Maya News, the improvements will help improve tourism. The biggest change will be to stop the transportation companies that have been operating at the airport, which Cueto called “irregular,” and also through creating a standard fair price for transfers that can’t be inflated.
In mid-December, TravelPulse covered the news of the arrest of three taxi drivers who threatened a foreign tourist when they ordered a ride from an Uber instead of a taxi in Puerto Morelos, not far from Cancun.
While Ubers can be an attractive cost-saving option, traditional taxi drivers in the region have been known to use violence against Uber drivers and their passengers because of the newfound competition.
Establishing a fair, standard rate for transportation from the Cancun International Airport might help resolve the feud between taxi drivers and rideshare drivers.
In October, the local government did away with the rule that charged travelers entering through the airport with a fee if they brought more than one electronic device with them—something Elite Travel Management CEO Tammy Levent had personal experience with, an experience she likened to "extortion."
