Todos Santos, a quaint, artsy town located 45 minutes hour north of Cabo San Lucas, is in the process of a significant transformation, thanks to the development of a master-plan community called Tres Santos that will include a boutique hotel, residences, beach club, restaurant and Colorado State University's (CSU) first international research and education center.
The developers have recruited a top name in hospitality to oversee the hotel project: Chip Conley, founder and former CEO of Joie de Vivre, who now serves as head of global hospitality & strategy for Airbnb.
"I am excited to be a part of the development of Tres Santos," Conley said in a statement. "It is set in the perfect location, offering everything from art and culture to wellness and adventure. With travelers increasingly seeking a genuine experience, Tres Santos is a community that will meet a variety of interests."
Work on the Tres Santos project, which is the brainchild of MIRA Companies, a real estate investment and development firm that is an affiliate of Denver-based Black Creek Group, began with the May groundbreaking on the CSU Todos Santos Center.
The facility is scheduled to open in March. Thirty residences, which may be rented out to tourists when owners are not using them, are scheduled to be up and running by September, said Kappner Clark, marketing manager of Tres Santos.
The 32-room hotel, which will be bookended by a boardwalk and town square, is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2016.
Clark said the property is being handcrafted by Mexican artists, and will pay tribute to the area's heritage.
"We are targeting it to travelers looking for a relaxing and wellness-inspired retreat," said Clark. "It will also be open to families."
She said a combination of interior and outdoor living spaces will be organized around pools and gardens. Guest rooms and lounges will feature oversized windows to capitalize on the surrounding views. "The pool bar and grill will offer casual dining, and the restaurant will serve simple, seasonal cuisine," Clark said.
The hotel will be located in Beach, one of two villages under construction, which will also include homes, a beach club and fisherman's facilities for two existing commercial fishing cooperatives.
The second village, Town Farm, will feature an organic farm, homes, a boutique hotel, a farm-to-table restaurant, retail stores and the CSU facility.
Clark said Tres Santos is being designed to complement, rather than overshadow, Todos Santos. "Tres Santos is located within Todos Santos and will embrace the town's charm, style and natural beauty," she said. "It will allow visitors who fall in love with Todos Santos the opportunity to live and be a part of an inclusive and inspiring community that embraces a genuine appreciation for life's simple pleasures."
She noted that the destination has much to recommend it. "Todos Santos has it all - beautiful ocean and mountain views, perfect year-round weather, delicious food, outdoor activities, artistic and cultural experiences, charming architecture and buildings and incredible people," Clark said. "Few places rival the variety of natural assets found in Todos Santos. People who want to reconnect with themselves and be reminded of what it's like to be in the moment will love this place."
In other developments, Clark said work on the Tres Santos project was unaffected by Hurricane Odile. "As a matter of fact, the Tres Santos team has largely helped the town in general with recovery efforts, and all is looking great," she said. "Life has returned to somewhat a normal routine," she said. "It's safe to say Baja Sur is back."
