There was plenty of drama for an off-duty member of the Carnival Celebration ship during a cruise last month. Millić Šarović, a restaurant manager who hails from Montenegro, has been given Carnival’s “Hero” award during an onboard ceremony after he saved the life of an 11-month-old passenger.
According to online recounting of the events Šarović was eating at one of the restaurants aboard ship when another crew member approached him in a panic. A baby girl was choking on a grape, and multiple attempts to clear her airway had been unsuccessful; the little passenger had actually begun to turn blue.
“I instinctively jumped in because no one was applying the correct maneuver,” Šarović told Bar Info. “I took her even though I didn’t know if she was alive. It was a huge responsibility, but my parental instinct was stronger. Maybe it lasted only a minute, but to me it felt much longer. Then she vomited the grape she had swallowed and started breathing again. I just sat down afterward. I was completely overwhelmed.“
Šarović used his emergency training knowledge to perform a modified choking rescue technique designed for babies. When the ship’s medical staff arrived and checked on the baby, they credited Šarović’s prompt intervention with saving her life.
It was also reported that Šarović recently earned another significant achievement, as last year, Carnival named him the company’s Best Leader, recognizing his commitment to leadership and the support he provides to his peers.
