Atlanta, Georgia offers several options for travelers looking for a southern getaway this winter.

Of course, the weather is warmer down south. It may not be tropical paradise weather, but you won't be paying astronomically high prices like you would for those destinations. You can escape the frozen tundra and have a fun time. Or if you're looking for cooler weather this winter but you don't want to freeze up north, check out Atlanta.

Georgia's capital city is loaded with fun events and tours for families, couples and those who travel solo.

Book a stay around the Centennial Park District and you won't be disappointed.

The Glenn Hotel, which has a gorgeous rooftop sky lounge, is a great option, as well as the popular Omni Atlanta Hotel. Just around the corner is the historic The American Hotel, which recently made a comeback after a $16 million dollar property-wide renovation.

Now that you know the hot spots to stay, here are some fun things and events to do this winter in Atlanta.

-The Georgia Aquarium: From now through December 31, the main plaza transforms into a winter wonderland! You can go 'Behind the Seas' for additional $15 to view the backstage area of popular exhibits in a 45-minute tour. Additionally, the Georgia Aquarium is hosting Sips Under the Sea on New Year's Eve.

-Children's Christmas Parade: Giant parade balloons, marching bands, floats and more are featured in this holiday event benefiting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Bring the whole family for a festive event on December 2 that is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit.

-College Football Hall of Fame: Visit any time this winter if you love college football. From December 9 through January 2, this great interactive venue will host "Deck the Hall," which features treats, decorations and activities for all. Of course, the young ones will love the appearance of Santa and Fumbles the Elf.
