Soccer superstar Lionel Messi even affects travel.
When Messi decided to play in Miami for Major League Soccer, it created a fever pitch like nothing ever seen before in this country. But in a classic case of supply and demand, ticket prices are through the roof.
Although there’s no guarantee he will start or even play, Messi and Miami have games in several locations around the country. If you want to plan a road trip, here are the most affordable cities according to car rental company SIXT.
The most affordable, of course, is his new home city of Miami-Fort Lauderdale. The lowest ticket price, according to StubHub, is $135.

Online searches for ‘where is Lionel Messi playing next?’ is up 135 percent in the last month of July. Miami plays at home again on August 20, 2023. Behind Miami is Atlanta, with the lowest ticket price being $158. Atlanta will host Miami on September 16. Charlotte is the next least expensive city at $162 for the lowest ticket price. It will host Miami on October 21. Also on the list are Chicago, Orlando and Harrison, New Jersey, where the New York Red Bull play. A September 3, 2023, game in Los Angeles is commanding more than $440 for the lowest-priced ticket.
“We highly recommend purchasing tickets as soon as possible as demand increases and prices are expected to rise,” said Kelly Johnson, SVP of Marketing, North America at SIXT. “As for away games, the most affordable opportunity to see Messi is the Amatch vs. Atlanta United FC on September 16, 2023, with his last game of the season against Charlotte Football Club on October 21 a close second. However, if you’re willing to spare no expense, the match-up in Los Angeles over Labor Day weekend is guaranteed to be exceptional as Messi faces off against the Los Angeles Football Club.”
