The third annual Los Cabos International Film Festival opened Nov. 12 with an appearance by film star Reese Witherspoon in advance of a special screening of her film "Wild."
The film, directed by "Dallas Buyers Club" director Jean-Marc Vallée, follows the story of the autobiographical memoir "Wild: From Lost To Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" by Cheryl Strayed.
"I optioned the book and the author sent me a copy and I said, 'I need to make this a film," said Witherspoon during the opening.
In addition to remarks by Witherspoon, the festival opened with a posthumous tribute to film critic Roger Ebert, whose widow Chaz Ebert accepted the honor on his behalf.
The film festival's importance this year is underscored by the devastation wrought on Los Cabos by Hurricane Odile this past September, and the resilience its residents have shown in rebuilding. The hashtag #unstoppable has come to symbolize the concentrated rebuilding efforts throughout the tourism-rich area, and was seen on nearly every banner throughout the festival.
Hurricane Odile made landfall on Sept. 15 as a category 3 hurricane, stranding some 30,000 tourists and causing millions of dollars' worth of damage.
