You don't have to spend too much time in Britain to figure out that Wimbledon has become much more than just a tennis tournament played on grass.

No, this annual competition is a certified rite of summer in the U.K., with its appearance being just as much a part of the season as the Glastonbury Festival or a trip to the seaside.

The prestigious event, which happens to be the world's oldest tennis tournament, also sits high on many sports-loving travelers' bucket lists. The following is a guide to help get you ready to attend (whether in person or from afar).

When is Wimbledon?

The 2017 tournament takes place from July 3 to July 16th.

Where is It? And How Do I Get There?

The tournament takes place at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, in Wimbledon, which is a neighborhood of London.

While the charming village-like Wimbledon lies within the city, be aware that it is nowhere near the center of London, lying approximately seven miles to the southwest. It can be accessed by the Underground (Tube) from either the Southfields or Wimbledon stations, but in both cases, you will still need to walk around 20 minutes or take a bus/shuttle to where the matches are being played.

So What's the Ticket Situation?

In addition to the rule that participating players have to wear white and curtsy to the Queen if she is in attendance, the tradition regarding the tickets may just be the most unique thing about Wimbledon.

What's so special about the ticket situation? Well, you can just show up and get tickets.

I repeat: you can just show up and get tickets.

A majority of tickets are sold ahead of time by lottery months before the tournament-as part of official hospitality packages-and online from Ticketmaster the day before play at 9 a.m. However, the tournament always holds back a chunk of high-end tickets to be sold on the day of play itself.

The best way to get your hands on these tickets is to camp out near the grounds the night before. This jovial gathering culminates in being woken up at 6 a.m. by friendly stewards who hand out a 'ticket' to go wait in another line. In this line, you will get the right to purchase courtside tickets for the day.

If you aren't up for camping but are still willing to show up shortly after sunrise, you still may have a chance at a ticket or, worst case, probably a ground pass. The latter allow you to wander the grounds and watch lesser profile matches up-close or view games on a big screen from the famous Aorangi Terrace.

All the fascinating details of Wimbledon's unique ticket policy can be found on the tournament's official site.

How Should I Dress?

While Wimbledon has relaxed the dress code a bit over the years, 'Kentucky Derby casual' is still highly recommended.

A light jacket and sunscreen will both come in handy as well, regardless of what the forecast says when you set off.

Anything I Just Have to Eat or Drink at Wimbledon?

Absolutely. You cannot go to Wimbledon without having an order of strawberries drizzled with cream or drinking a cup of Pimm's-a herbal English liqueur mixed with lemonade and refreshing fruits.
