Everette Elliott told Fox 13 Salt Lake City: "I just did what I thought anybody else would do."
What he did was save a Greyhound bus full of passengers on Friday morning when the bus driver suffered a medical emergency and seemed to be losing consciousness.
Elliott was sleeping on the Greyhound heading north on I-15 near Orem, Utah, when he felt the bus swerve.
"I look up and it was like a video game. He was running cars off the road," Elliott said.
The bus driver didn't respond to a few passengers' inquiries, so Elliott made his way to the front.
"I'm talking to the bus driver, 'hey you okay? You okay?'" said Elliot. "He didn't say nothing. He just drives."
When they passed a Utah Highway Patrol car, Elliott shouted at the driver, jolting him awake. The driver steered the bus into a median before slamming on the breaks and coming to a stop.
"I grabbed him by both the gloves, put them together and said 'no'," said Elliott. "Looked him in the eye and said 'no, you're done. No more driving.'"
There were no major injuries to the 23 passengers or the bus driver, though he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Greyhound stated that "the driver experienced a medical emergency" in a statement emailed to Fox 13 News.
In speaking as to why Elliott took action with the bus driver, he said, "I didn't want to die and I know they didn't want to die."
"We're lucky to have a passenger that was able to step up and take care of the driver," a Utah Highway Patrol spokesperson told KSL.
