Spring break 2026 is just around the corner, and if you haven't booked a getaway yet, all is not lost.
While the options may be limited at this point, it's still entirely possible to get a vacation on the books.
For family travelers in particular, (who are tied to school schedules) being flexible with arrival and departure dates may not necessarily be possible. But if you're able to flex a bit on other factors, such as destination, mode of transportation and accommodations, a memorable vacation is entirely within reach.
To help make your vacation planning process easier, we reached out to a handful of travel experts to gather tips on how to make a last-minute spring break getaway a reality. Read on to find out what our travel experts had to say.
Don't focus on one specific hotel or destination
The key to successfully planning a last-minute spring break getaway is not fixating on a single property for your accommodations or a single destination, for that matter. Instead, think about what features you're looking for, suggests travel expert Mary Cropper, with New York-based luxury travel company Black Tomato.
"Flexibility is paramount when planning last minute trips, especially if it is family trips for spring break," Cropper tells TravelPulse. "Instead of focusing on where you want to go and what hotels you need to stay at, refocus on the elements you know for fact: How many people, room configurations, does it matter if rooms are interconnecting versus adjacent, do you want [a] hot or cold [destination], stationary stay or multiple locations."
Know how far you're willing to travel
Ask yourself this question as you're considering the details of a last-minute getaway: How far are you willing to drive in a car or fly in a plane?
Nailing down the answer will help a travel advisor identify a couple of perfect options, says Cropper. And while we're on this point, working with a travel advisor is a smart move if you're booking a hastily-planned trip. It takes the stress off of you having to figure everything out.
Check last-minute booking platforms that specialize in unsold inventory
Traditional travel booking sites (such as Expedia, Travelocity and the like) may show limited availability this close to spring break. But some vacation rental platforms, such as Whimstay, focus on listing properties that are available within a 30-day window, explains Alex Alioto, founder and head of growth and partnerships for Whimstay.
Marketplaces like Whimstay (which features rentals around the country and the world) negotiate with property owners to fill gap nights that might otherwise sit empty, Alioto explains. "Property owners are motivated to fill last-minute vacancies, so you're getting genuine savings on quality stays—not just leftover options," he says.
Even flexibility of 1 to 2 days can make a big difference
Spring break timing varies by school district, which means peak pricing shifts throughout March and early April. If you're able to adjust your trip by even a day or two, you'll dramatically increase your options.
"Mid-week departures, [such as] Sunday through Thursday, often have significantly better availability and pricing than weekend travel," explains Alioto. "This small flexibility can mean the difference between scrambling for overpriced options and securing a great property at a reasonable rate."

Search slightly beyond popular spring break destinations
When spring break hotspots like Miami, Florida or Cancún, Mexico are showing no availability, look at nearby alternatives that may offer similar experiences.
"Consider Gulf Coast beaches instead of Florida's Atlantic coast, or explore Puerto Rico instead of the most crowded Caribbean islands," Alioto says. "These secondary destinations often have comparable weather and activities with better availability and pricing, especially when booking last-minute."
Don't overlook a local road trip
If a big-ticket trip is not in the cards this year, don't despair. Instead, consider pivoting to a road-trip getaway, suggests Alyssa Nelson, a North Carolina-based travel and lifestyle blogger at Wayward Blog, says this type of trip can be equally enjoyable.
"Choose a destination within a three-hour radius, and really spend the week (or weekend) getting to explore it like a local," says Nelson.
Bonus tip: Destination that still has availability
Still not sure where you want to go for spring break? Cropper of Black Tomato says there is still availability in some popular destinations around the world, particularly at larger resorts like the Four Seasons in Papagayo Peninsula, Costa Rica.
"This is a meaningful and easy one, as there are direct flights [to Costa Rica] from Newark, New Jersey; Texas, and Miami, Florida," says Cropper.
