A&K Sanctuary, a unit of A&K Travel Group, is scheduled to unveil the Kitirua Plains Lodge on June 1. The 128-acre property is in Kenya’s Amboseli region, known as the center of elephant country.
“The property marks Abercrombie & Kent’s return to Amboseli, where in 1962 Geoffrey Kent brought his very first clients and pioneered the modern luxury safari,” A&K said.
“Designed in partnership with Luxury Frontiers, the lodge is conceived not to stand out against its surroundings but to sit within them, appearing almost to have evolved from the landscape itself,” the company added.
“The creative use of local materials and Amboseli's natural palette is inseparable from Kitirua Plains Lodge's sustainability initiatives,” A&K said, and is in keeping with the design of A&K Sanctuary’s new Gorilla Forest Lodge in Uganda and Baines’ Lodge in Botswana, both of which were designed by Luxury Frontiers, which specializes in architecture and interior design for the eco-tourism market.
Surrounded by savannahs, bright green marshes and acacia woodlands, the Kitirua Plain Lodge, featuring 13 standalone suites, will offer up dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon.
“The use of traditional Maasai-inspired forms and local artisanship ensures that Kitirua Plains Lodge exists alongside the semi-nomadic Maasai, the traditional custodians of the land, rather than as an imposition,” A&K said.
“This coexistence is the grounding principle of the property, informing decisions from construction methods to the curved elements and traditional wooden lattices that frame the boma, where guests gather for sundowners timed to catch the incredible sunsets over the far-reaching plains.”
